Exclusive interview with Discoverys Deadliest Catch Captain Sig Hansen
The son of a Norwegian fisherman, Sig began fishing at age His father Sverre came from a long line of fishermen and was one of the first pioneers of the crab industry in Alaska. While still in high school, Sig joined his father aboard the family boat, and also had the opportunity to fish in Norwegian waters in the summers. After finishing high school, Sig took up fishing full time, and at the young age of 22, earned the position of relief captain on the Northwestern.
Four years later, he became the boats full-time captain and one of the youngest ever to take command. Sig has made a name for himself as a hard-charging captain who doesnt suffer fools or disloyalty lightly.
From his earliest years at the Northwesterns helm, Sig has known his position in the captains chair depends completely on results. If you can’t bring home the catch, you go back to being a deckhand. In his role as the Hansen patriarch, Sig remains fiercely protective of his top-producing operation, his reputation and his crew.

Deadliest Catch: What Happened To The Northwestern?
On top of legal issues facing the Hansen family, in , Captain Sig Hansen's younger brother, Edgar Hansen, who has also appeared on "Deadliest Catch" as a crew member confessed to sexually assaulting a minor, USA Today reports. Edgar has been absent from "Deadliest Catch" since season 15, but he may still be on the crew, just not on camera. For his part, Sig has been embroiled in a decades-long sex abuse controversy related to his estranged daughter, Melissa Eckstrom, according to Seattle PI.

Before all of the legal trouble, though, the family was able to use the Northwestern for entertainment purposes outside of "Deadliest Catch." If the voice of the boat "Crabby the Boat" from the animated feature film "Cars 2" sounded familiar that's because it was: the boat itself was based on the F/V Northwestern, and the character was voiced by Captain Sig. The Northwestern even had a Disney toy made in its likeness.
